PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Supporting English Teachers in creating Student-centred Classrooms

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Educare worked with the education bureaus from the cities of Jinjiang and Chengdu to conduct a series of workshops to improve teachers’ teaching of the English language. In the city of Jinjiang, 50 English teachers from a kindergarten and various primary and secondary schools were equipped with Kagan Cooperative Learning and Active Learning strategies.

The strategies were adapted to the curriculum and they were especially useful for English teachers to create a student-centred learning environment. The various structures allowed students to have daily practice in English oral communication while working in pairs or teams. They also facilitated the development of written English language skills. Interesting and fun ways to learn and practise English language were also promoted in group class activities.

Education Consultancy

Professional Development

  • Strategically identified the PCD needs of teachers
  • Reviewed China’s syllabus and textbook to create customised and relevant programmes
  • Conducted a four-day workshop on Kagan Cooperative Learning and two-day workshop on Active Learning for 50 primary, secondary and kindergarten teachers in Jinjiang to improve teachers’ teaching of English Language
  • Conducted a workshop on Kagan Cooperative Learning for 74 teachers in Chengdu

Monitoring

  • Conducted a two-day review on Kagan Cooperative Learning to monitor learning and address concerns
  • Teachers submitted reflection essays about their learning, experience and challenges during implementation of structures in classrooms. Educare consultant provided online guidance to give constructive feedback and encouragement
  • The teachers’ performance was monitored through instructional coaching during classroom observation after three months of classroom implementation

Performance Management

  • Provided detailed developmental and performance feedback for each teacher observed
