Do you know that teachers ask up to two questions every minute and approximately 400 questions in a day? Questioning accounts for up to a third of teaching time and is second only to time devoted to explicit instruction.
If teachers ask so many questions, it is probably worth spending time to make sure that teachers use the right questions in the right way, and that they are constantly improving their questioning techniques.
In this workshop, teachers will learn how to model intellectual engagement, support learners in constructing their own understanding, and help learners clarify their own thinking through questions. These questioning techniques will be introduced using Thinking Routines to induce different types of thinking in students.
After the workshop, teachers will walk away confident in using questions to deepen students’ learning. Further, understanding the nature and use of powerful questions enables teachers to reflect on their own practice and learning.
